On September 5-9 2019, all 25 digital cones made it to the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.

Ars Electronica is a world-class festival for art, technology, and society, bringing together hundreds-of-thousands of people around more than 500 events.

The cones have been collecting data from the conference attendees continuously for five days with more than 2160 people interacting with the questions.

Key findings:

  • 56% agreed that street lamps should automatically turn off when streets are empty to save energy, while 44% thought that street lamps should always be on at night to increase the sense of safety. This question also had the most interaction with 208 state changes across the five days.
  • 81% agreed that cities should monitor the carbon footprint of citizens to impose individual taxes.
  • 55% found that public health data should be confidential, while 45% agreed that public health data should be open source to support medical research.
  • Only 37% agreed that people should be able to drive any type of vehicle in the city, while the rest believe that only zero-emission vehicles should be allowed in inner cities.
  • The question of whether public spaces should prioritise free WiFi or benches was also heavily engaged (204 interactions), with a majority (65%) leaning towards benches before WiFi.
